1875-77, Griqualand West, Stats., 2v
Statute law of the Territory of Griqualand West; Comprising the proclamations and government notices enacted before the promulgation of the
constitution ordinance, and still wholly or partly in force: title varies, n.a., Vol. 1-2, Cape Town, Saul Solomon & Co., 1875 & 1877. (Vol. 1 & 2 have
separate TOCs and indexes; the former starting on p. 5 in each book, and the latter following pp. 102 & 223 respectively. The Territory of Griqualand West
was an area of ca. 15,000 sq. mi. in the northern Cape Province bounded by the Orange River to the south, the Langeberg Range to the west, and the
Orange Free State to the east. The territory was invented more or less “on the fly’ subsequent to a population influx following the discovery of diamonds
in the area in 1871. Initially the area was governed through proclamations issued by the High Commissioner for Southern Africa or by an appointed Local
Commissioner. In 1873 Letters Patent issued under Queen Victoria elevated the territory into a province of Cape Colony and provided for its
governance by the Governor of Cape Colony, or, in his absence, by a “Lieutenant-Governor” or “Administrator”. The latter official governed with the advice of
an Executive Council; all legislative functions being invested in a Legislative Council, comprised of four appointed and four elective members.
Although it didn’t formally become a city until 1913, the newly founded town of Kimberly served as the capital. Vol. I of this work contains the high & local
commissioners’ proclamations and government notices from 1871 to June 1873 that were still in force in 1875. Vol. II covers the texts of the Letters
Patent from Queen Victoria and the proclamations from July 1873 to Feb. 1876.)
