Civil Code of Japan was principally based upon the German model. The code was adopted by the Japanese Diet in piecemeal fashion during the years
1896-1898. The complete code was promulgated on 15 June 1898 and came into full operation on 16 July of that year. In the preface the author gratefully
acknowledges his heavy reliance upon Tomioka Yasuro’s Gembun-Itchi Mimpo-Seigi, a popular Japanese commentary on the civil code.)
