1898, Civil Code (Lonholm)
The civil code of Japan: transla. by Ludwig Lönholm, iii+viii+321p, Tokyo/Yokohama, Maruya & Co./Kelly & Walsh, 1898. (The Civil Code of Japan was
principally based upon the German model. The code was adopted by the Japanese Diet in piecemeal fashion during the years 1896-1898. The complete code
was promulgated on 15 June 1898 and came into full operation on 16 July of that year. Lönholm was the translator of an earlier German publication of the
Japanese Civil Code. This, his English language translation differs in small particulars from that of Gubbins, also offered on this site. Lönholm, a
professor at the Imperial University Tokyo, justifies this publication of an competing translation of the code by the same publishers on the grounds
that “for a “scientific translation or explanation a knowledge of German law is quite indispensable.)
