Bryant, Liberty, order & law under native Irish rule, 1923

|
Written at a moment when Ireland was on its way to gain independence from England, this book exemplifies one of the prinicpal currents in Irish society at the time, namely, an exploration of the foundations of Ireland and its people. In each chapter the author studies various legal topics taken from the Senchus Mor (ca. 8th century). She offers numerous citations to the Ancient Laws of Ireland, published in 4 vols. by H.M.S.O., 1865-1901. The text provides a general historical introduction in Chap. 1 and a specific introduction to the Senchus Mor in Chap. 2. A brief bibliography appears on p.xxiii. In addition to a useful index, the author has compiled a glossary of ancient legal terms (p.383-389), their modern equivalents should such exist, and their meanings insofar as one can determine.
