Description and Holding Information
1944, Indian Finance Act (Extension of Salt Tax, etc.)
Made by the Governor General under the procedure prescribed by Section 67B of the Ninth Schedule to the Government of India Act, 1935: 10p, London,
HMSO, 1944. (The Legislative Assembly refused to even consider this legislation, which continued the hated salt tax and other unpopular British
imposts. Having made an official determination that passage was “essential for the interests of British India” and that a state of emergency existed, Viceroy
and Governor General Wavell invoked his emergency powers to recommend to the Council of State that the bill be enacted despite the Legislative
Assembly’s refusal to act.)
