Coke, History of the West Indies, 1808-11, 3v, repr. 1969
A history of the West Indies; Containing the natural, civil, and ecclesiastical history of each island; With an account of the missions instituted in
those islands, from the commencement of their civilization; But more especially of the missions which have been established in that archipelago by
the Society, late in connection with the Rev. John Wesley: by Thomas Coke, LL.D., Vol. 1 & 3, Liverpool, Nuttall, Fisher & Dixon, 1808 & 1811, Vol. 2
“printed for the author,” all 3 volumes repr. in 1969 by Mnemosyne, Miami. (A very scanty index is provided in Vol. III, pp. 531-543. There are no TOCs.
This work was produced for and by missionaries with the “work of the Lord” uppermost in their minds. However, it contains passim copious facts on the
secular history and civil organization of the various jurisdictions covered; much of it data that would be very difficult to find elsewhere. The work
is especially useful for Hispaniola and its northern half, the French colony of Saint-Domingue. See Vol. I, pp. 81-139, and Vol. III, pp. 304-530.
The author’s emphasis on the latter was no doubt occasioned by the intense interest in Europe in the then recent events surrounding the slave revolution
that created Haiti. Another jurisdiction with extensive historical coverage is Jamaica, which is discussed in Vol. I, pp. 216-459 & Vol. II, pp.
3-33. Focus on other jurisdictions is as follows. In Vol. II: Trinidad, pp. 34-46; Grenada, pp. 47-87; Barbados, pp. 88-164; Tobago, pp. 165-177; St.
Vincent, pp. 178-290; St. Lucia, pp. 291-303; Martinique, pp. 304-331; Dominica, pp. 332-383; Guadeloupe, pp. 384-406; & Barbuda, Antigua, Montserrat, pp.
407-463. In Vol. III: Nevis, pp. 3-35; St. Kitts, pp. 36-75; St. Bart’s, pp. 76-89; Br. Virgin Is., pp. 90-152; Danish Vir. Is., pp. 153-173; Porto
Rico, pp. 174-192; Bahamas, pp. 193-219; Bermudas, pp. 220-261; & Cuba, pp. 262-303.)
