Sketches of Haiti; From the expulsion of the French to the death of Christophe: by W.W. Harvey, xvi-416p, London, L.B. Seeley & Son, 1827. (A TOC starts on p. xv. Lacks index. Harvey visited Haiti during the latter part of Christophe’s reign, and, was a visitor for a period at Sans Souci, giving him a firsthand view of the workings of the King’s government. Although he doesn’t shy from expressing criticism when he feels that it is merited, his work attempts to be even handed in its narration of Haitian history, and he leans hardest on the French when assigning blame for the many outrages that occurred. As to post-revolutionary Haitian society, he is sympathetic to the extreme difficulties faced by a community of people, most of whom had been raised in wholly uneducated conditions, in fashioning a new society to even the level of modernity prevailing at the times.)
