|
The French Revolution in San Domingo: by T. (Theodore) Lothrop Stoddard, xviii+410p, Boston, etc., Houghton Mifflin, 1914. (This is an essential work for study of the period 1788 to 1804. Despite revealing some personal prejudices, Stoddard is generally scholarly and his account is extremely detailed. The work is especially valuable for one trying to follow the convoluted politics of the white colonial population as it navigates the politics of the French revolutionary period, while trying to achieve its own ends. The footnotes are extremely valuable, and an extensive, partially annotated biblio-graphy is provided on pp. 395-410. Stoddard’s central theme is that, given the ingrained and stubborn mindset of the French settler class, whose members often proved their own worst enemies, the melancholy fate of the French colony was essentially preordained.)
