Les responsables des vepres du 25 mai: by Ascencio A. Noel, Publiciste, (4)+16p, n.p., n.d. (the piece is dated at its end: 27 July 1957). (Lacks TOC & index. This is an account of the events surrounding the short term of Provisional President Daniel Fignolé, a popular labor leader known as “the professor.” Fignolé was installed by the Conseil Militaire de Gouvernement that had overthrown President Paul E. Magloire in late 1956. Their first choice for provisional president, Franck Sylvain, proved unsatisfactory to the military, and lasted for only 56 days. They then settled on Fignolé, who was inaugurated on 25 May, but he proved unsatisfactory to the U.S. CIA. Under pressure from the U.S. ambassador, he was deposed in 19 days. Serious rioting followed that action and a savage military reaction resulted in the killing of thousands of civilians in the poorer districts of Port-au-Prince. Noel narrates events leading up to Fignolé’s inauguration on 25 May and through his deposition and its bloody consequences. His term vepres du 25 mai is likely an allusion, somewhat off the point given who actually got massacred in Haiti, to the widespread slaughter of the French during the “Sicilian Vespers” of 1282.)
