Madiou, History of Haiti, Bk. VIII, 1843-46, 1904
Thomas Madiou, Histoire d'Haïti, Tome VIII, de 1843 a 1846: n.a., 357p, with “Postface,” by Michèle Oriol, pp. 359-368, Port-au-Prince, J. Verrollot,
1904; Repr. Editions Henri Deschamps, (1990?). (Although schooled in law, and a sometime editor of Le Moniteur, the Haitian government gazette,
Tho-mas Madiou made his lasting mark as one of the most significant of Haitian historians. His magnum opus, Histoire d’Haiti, although left uncompleted at
his death, was conceptualized as an 8-vol. work covering the history of Hispaniola/Haiti from the landing of Columbus to 1846. Madiou’s goal was to
organize coverage as follows: Tome I, 1492-1799; T. II, 1799-1803; T. III, 1803-07; T. IV, 1807-11; T. V, 1811-18; T. VI, 1819-26, T. VII, 1827-43; & T.
VIII, 1843-46. During his lifetime, 1814-84, Madiou completed only Tomes. I-III; published as Histoire d’Haiti, 1492-1807, 3 v. in 1, Port-au-Prince,
Imp. de J. Courtois, 1847-48. In 1904, twenty years after Madiou’s death, working from the author’s manuscripts, members of his family published Tome
VIII covering the years 1843-46.Tome VIII may have been chosen because Madiou’s notes for 1843-46 were the most well developed; not an unreasonable
guess, since Madiou would have had first-hand familiarity with the tumultuous “Time of the Four Presidents.” He was in his early thirties when those
events occurred, having returned to live in Haiti after prep school, college and legal education in France. Although Tome VIII lacks a TOC and index,
summaries of the material devoted to various increments of the four-year timespan are provided as follows: 1843, pp. 5-6; 1844, p.75-77; 1845,
p.155-156/231-232; and 1845-46, p.325-26. For 1846, the text starts at p.337, but that year lacks a summary. Madiou’s portrait serves as a frontispiece.
Portraits or busts of other luminaries appear as follows: The “Four Presidents”: Charles Herard Aine {aka Riverre}, 12/31/43 to 5/3/44, p.64b; Philipp
Guerrier, 5/3/44 to 4/15/45, p.144b; Louis Pierrot, 4/16/45 to 3/1/46, p.246b; & Jean-Baptiste Riche, 3/1/46 to 2/27/47, p.346b. Illustrations are also
provided for Auguste Elie, Assembly Deputy, p.20b; Charles-Nicolas Celigni Ardouin, writer and statesman, p.166b; Beaubrun Ardouin, Min. of Just., Pub.
Ed. & Religion, p.194b; Jean Paul, Sec. of Int. & Sec. for Ag., p.292b. Finally, an aquatint of Port-au-Prince in mid-19th century appears on p.118b.
Many decades later, in the years 1987-89, Editions Henri Deschamps issued all of Madiou’s work in a mixed format: Tomes I-III & VIII in reprints of the
1847/48 & 1904 editions, and Tomes IV-VII in “New Editions,” which were compiled from his manuscripts.)
