the work lacks an index This text provides a comprehensive overview of the most important aspects of France’s premier colony near the apogee of its
prosperity. It appears to be an officially-sponsored study, commissioned by the Ministry of the Marine, a French royal office, part of the functions of
which paralled those of England’s Secretary of State for the Colonies. The title page bears the legend: Avec approbation & Privilège du Roi. Despite
its apparent provenance, the work was suppressed by the French government, and most copies were destroyed. D’Auberteuil’s full name was supplied by the
Univ. of Michigan Law Lib. cataloging.)
