Hopkirk, Account of Insurrection in St. Domingue, 1833
An account of the insurrection in St. Domingo, begun in August 1791, taken from authentic sources: by J.G. Hopkirk, (5)+6-59P, Edinburgh/London,
William Blackwood/T. Cadell, 1833. (This little work by an English conservative presents the French loss of the colony of Saint Domingue as a cautionary
tale for his compatriots, lest they be lured into a too facile acceptance of the Jacobin notion that all men are created equal. Typi-cal of his general
tone is his description, p.55, of the Code Noir of Louis XIV {see Lois et constitutions des colonies François…, V.1, pp. 414-424.} as being an “edict
in favour of the slaves.” His chief villians are members of the French branch of the Société des Amis des Noirs, to whom he ascribes most of the
blame for the dire end to the French presence in Haiti. Pages 14-46 provide a useful English translation of the famous address to the French National
Assembly, 3 Nov. 1789, of the Deputies from the General Assembly of Saint Domingue held at Cap François. The French language original of the latter is
available on this site as Lettre et declaration des députés de Saint-Domingue a l’Assemblée nationale; adressée a leurs commettans)
