Adams, Henry, "Toussaint Louverture," 1891
"Toussaint Louverture"; Extract from History of the United States, Vol. 1-9, NY, G.P. Putnam’s Sons, 1891; i.e., the TP, TOC & pp. 371-398 of Volume
1. (This extract from Vol. 1 of Adams’ history of the Jefferson and Madison administrations is notable for its detailed description of the
international politics involving the United States, Great Britain and Spain in the intrigues surrounding the attempt by Napoleon to crush Toussaint Louverture
and his ex-slave followers in Saint-Domingue, with intent to restore both French rule and the institution of slavery to that breakaway French colony.
Although Adams’ is sparing in his admiration for Louverture, he is scathing in his anal-ysis of the character and motives of the French actors in the
drama. Nor does he varnish over the double dealing of both the American president Thomas Jefferson and of Great Britain in abandoning Louverture to his
fate once his continued resistance to France no longer seemed to serve their interests. In Adams’ view the British, in particular, acted follishly by
squandered their best chance to thwart the immature Napoleon’s future rise; to their great later cost. He also advances the theory that the Haitian
revolution had a pivotal role in United States history; i.e., that it was the failure of the French effort to retake Saint-Domingue that led to
Napoleon’s abandonment of his imperial designs on the North American mainland, in Louisiana and Florida, and his decision to sell the huge Territory of
Louisiana to the United States.)
