1791, A new constitution for Saint-Domingue
(This document memoralizes an attempt
by the revolutionary National Assembly to fashion a new governing constitution for Saint-Domingue that would help to keep the colony under French
control, while providing for a modicum of local self-government. The project became moot within a year under the pressures of increased radicalization in
French politics, the end of the monarchy, and the full flowering of the slave revolution in the colony.)
