1987A, Constitution of 1987 (French version, n.p., n.d.)
République d’Haïti; Constitution de la République d’Haïti, 29 Mars 1987: n.a., (2)+85p, Port-au-Prince, n.p., n.d. [1987?]. (The entire text is in
French, although, in an historical first, a parallel Kreyol was also printed in Le Moniteur. See next title. The passage of this constitution followed
the overthrow of Jean-Claude (Baby Doc) Duvalier in 1986. Its goal was to make permanent some of the achievements of the movement that overthrew
Duvalier. The new constitution made significant moves toward lessening the central-ization of the financial and political structure that had facilitated the
repeated emergence of dictatorial regimes. In the areas of civil rights and culture, the new constitution provided for grassroots participation in
the selection of the all-important Electoral Council, which supervises elections. It also recognized Haitian Kreyòl as an official language alongside
French, legalized Vodoo as the majority religion, and made several provisions for the protection of human rights.)
