Cuba in war time: by Richard Harding Davis, illustrated by Frederic Remington, 143 p., London, William Heinemann, 1897. ( A controversial work which is said to have played a part in the United States' involvement in the Spanish-American War. The author, a reporter for the New York Journal, was sent by William Randolph Hearst to cover the Cuban uprising. His reports, originally published as letters in the New York Journal, gave the American public a first hand account of the war. The 24 illustrations by noted artist Frederic Remington added to the appeal of the book. Chapters describe Cuba in war time, document the execution of Adolfo Rodriguez who was the son of a Cuban farmer, and discuss the practice of Spanish authorities in searching passengers in the harbor of Havana on ships flying a neutral flag.)
