RECRUITMENT FOR CONTENT MANAGER

Position Description

The Content Manager, a professional librarian with an excellent understanding of law books and the sources of law generally, reports directly to the Executive Director, and works in tandem with the Production Manager and the Business Manager to ensure that LLMC is effective and efficient in promoting preservation, collection development and space recovery on film and on-line.  LLMC is a non-profit law library cooperative which also does business and collaborates with other kinds of libraries and other organizations.  The position will pay $45-50,000 depending on the qualifications of the selected person. RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Content Manager will work closely with the Executive Director for the first year or two, to ensure adequate training and understanding.  After training the Content Manager will work independently but must be highly productive and always work effectively with others in LLMC.  In a traditional library setting, someone performing work similar to the Content Manager might be called a bibliographer, a cataloger, or a collection development professional. This position at LLMC involves some competencies from each of those kinds of positions. 

 

The Content Manager:

  1. Core Responsibilities (roughly 50-75% of time)
    1. Decides order in which titles are processed from micro or paper to digital, working from LLMC’s catalogs and general priorities, and balancing the schedules and needs of contributing libraries.
    2. Identifies a source for titles selected for the LLMC program, which may involve negotiating with the source, arranging phased shipments, and monitoring the flow of books into and out of LLMC.
    3. Identifies a cataloging record that accurately describes the material, and adjusts the record as needed to match the material when it arrives.
    4. Works with the Production Manager to achieve an efficient and effective work flow process.
    5. Provides bibliographic guidance to production personnel.
    6. Assigns digital directory identification number to each title.
  2. Other Responsibilities
    1. Contributes to discussions about what new titles to include in the program.
    2. Develops and extends relations with LLMC members, and with other collaborating organizations.
    3. Attends relevant professional meetings such as AALL and AALS, library cooperatives, and regional library organizations.
    4. Maintains current awareness of trends in digital publishing, legal publishing, and related activities.
    5. Develops and extends network of professional contacts.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

M.L.S or equivalent from an ALA accredited program.

Five to ten years of successful, progressively more responsible experience in a law library, preferably a large academic or public law library with an extensive collection.

Comprehensive understanding of the sources and structure of U.S. legal materials.

Basic understanding of MARC formats, although not at the level required for a fulltime catalog librarian.

Proven ability to work as a team member in a dynamic environment.

Proven ability to work independently, to be a self-starter, as well as part of the team.

Experience working with legal material in paper, digital and microform formats.

An understanding of the rules of legal citation (The Blue Book).

Proven ability to identify what one needs to learn, and to learn about it, with minimal direction.

Proven ability to identify problems and propose solutions; to create an efficient and effective work flow.

Excellent communicator, in writing and orally.

Must be self-motivated and able to produce a large quantity of accurate work, and to juggle successfully competing and changing priorities.

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

J.D. from an ABA accredited program.

Successful experience working with partner organizations, negotiating agreements that are mutually beneficial.

Knowledge of sources of law and structure of legal bibliography for other nations and international organizations.

 

SEARCH PROCESS:

A search committee of three members of the LLMC Board of Directors will recommend the selected candidate to the Board.  Applications will be considered as we receive them.  We will use telephone interviews to screen applicants who appear to have the required qualifications, and personal interviews to make final decisions.  Finalists will interview at LLMC headquarters, at LLMC expense.  We may ask candidates to have intermediate personal interviews at a more convenient location.
